Earl Of Strafford

Tucked away in the charming village of Hooton Roberts, Earl Of Strafford isn’t just your typical countryside gastropub-it’s the kind of place you stumble upon and instantly want to tell everyone about. With its blend of traditional British comfort and modern hospitality, this spot at 11 Doncaster Road, Rotherham S65 4PF, offers a warm and memorable dining experience that feels like a cozy hug, especially if you snag a seat by the fireplace.

First impressions? Think heritage-style interiors, exposed wood, and a crackling fire that draws you in before the menu even hits your hands. The team here clearly understands the balance between hearty food and an inviting atmosphere. Whether you’re dropping by solo or sharing a table with friends for Sunday lunch, the Earl Of Strafford welcomes you with a sense of ease and familiarity.

Now let’s talk about the menu, which manages to walk that fine line between pub classics and elevated dishes that surprise. One dish that stands out is the Steak & Guinness Pie-a rich, deeply savory staple that doesn’t mess around. The crust is golden, buttery, and gives way to fork-tender chunks of beef swimming in a sauce that’s pure comfort. It’s the kind of pie that makes you pause mid-bite just to appreciate the craft.

The Fish & Chips is another hero on the menu. Crisp batter, flaky white fish, and thick-cut chips that somehow maintain their crunch. Add a side of mushy peas and a splash of malt vinegar, and you’re in classic British pub heaven.

Craving something lighter? The Cheese Soufflé is surprisingly refined for a place that serves pints. It’s fluffy, cheesy, and beautifully presented-a nod to the kitchen’s willingness to push beyond standard fare. The Vegan Burger and Sweet Potato Fries also prove the pub doesn’t forget about modern dietary preferences. The burger has a real meaty texture, and the fries are dangerously addictive.

Speaking of addictive-desserts here are not an afterthought. If you see the Espresso Chocolate Brownie on the menu, do yourself a favor and order it. It’s rich but not cloying, with that perfect balance of bitter espresso and velvety chocolate. For those celebrating something special, the Birthday Cake is whimsical, nostalgic, and generously portioned.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a pub without a proper drink selection, and Earl Of Strafford delivers with confidence. The beer selection is extensive and curated, featuring local ales that rotate seasonally. If beer’s not your thing, the Prosecco and wine list hold their own, offering something for every palate. Plus, they serve a mean coffee-surprisingly strong and smooth, ideal for capping off a lazy lunch or dinner.

One of the most underappreciated features here is the tea selection. It’s not just an afterthought; they take tea seriously, which makes sense given the relaxed, countryside vibes. Sipping a pot of Earl Grey or a herbal blend in their outdoor seating area on a quiet afternoon feels a bit like pressing pause on real life.

Accessibility is clearly a priority here. There’s a wheelchair-accessible entrance, seating, and even a dedicated toilet-a small detail, but it reflects the venue's inclusive attitude. The vibe is also ideal for those looking for a solo dining spot with soul. You won’t feel out of place on your own, and the service is just the right level of attentive without being pushy.

If you're more of a sharer, start with the Chicken Goujons or a small plate to get a feel for the flavors. From there, whether you opt for a Bangers and Mash, Salmon, or even the cheekily named Black & Blue Burger, you’re in for a satisfying ride.

Service is another highlight-it’s professional but relaxed. The staff know the menu, offer genuine recommendations, and seem genuinely happy to be there. There’s no corporate script, no rushed interactions-just people who love good food and good conversation.

This isn’t a spot for a quick grab-and-go. In fact, Earl Of Strafford doesn’t offer delivery or takeaway, and that’s kind of the point. It’s meant to be experienced, savored, and remembered. With no-contact delivery trends dominating the food scene, it's refreshing to see a place that reminds us of the joy in simply sitting down and staying awhile.

In a world full of pub chains and forgettable meals, Earl Of Strafford stands out as a proper destination-a place where food, drink, and atmosphere come together to create something genuinely special.

Called in by chance after seeing they were dog friendly after a walk around near by Thrybergh park. Great food with value for money on 2 or 3 course options. Our dog Eric had a lovely little blanket put out with his own bowl of water & a few treats. We will definitely be coming back.

Beautiful looking pub, attentive staff, generous portions and proper homemade type of food. Starters ordered were garlic mushrooms and belly pork, delicious and generous portions. For mains, hunter's chicken, probably largest hunter's chicken I've ever had, with really nice homemade slaw rather than out of tub that you'd get any many pub chains, would also recommend the onion rings as they are made on site rather than out of bag. Also very nice balcony/beer garden at the back to have a drink in the sun. I would recommend and will be visiting again soon hopefully

Our initial visit to this place was this Sunday, and it definitely won’t be our last. The Sunday lunch was outstanding. The staff were remarkably friendly, and the place had a charming atmosphere.

We went to Earl of Stratford for my neices hen party. Couldn't fault the set up of the tables we had and how they let us in to decorate. Staff were really lovely and polite and Couldn't do enough for us. The only problem most of us had was the food, we had to phone in our order with us being a big group. The starters and extras were lovely but 11 of us had the chicken and it was dry and most if it was left also the chips were really hard and dry. To us it seemed they had cooked our meals and kept them warm, they were not cooked fresh. I don't like to put negative reviews but this really does need to addressed. We spent alot of money on the food and felt disappointed To finish on a positive the pub itself is lovely and clean and all the staff were great.

Lovely pub, nice and clean. Very welcoming. Outside area to sit front and back. Dog friendly. Staff were very friendly and service was excellent. Unfortunately I cannot give 5 stars for the food. I had trio roast. The vegetables were over cooked. I had trio dessert. chocolate brownie, cheesecake and Eton mess. The eton was was basically a big blob of cream with a few tiny pieces of meringue, no strawberries. The cheesecake didn’t taste anything like cheesecake, more like a mango tart. The food let this pub down
